Tampines East Community Clean-Up on SG Clean Day

April 19, 2026

On 19 April 2026, close to 100 residents and youth volunteers gathered in Tampines East for The 9321st Worldwide Cleanup Campaign Green Earth, Street Cleanup in Tampines East. Held in conjunction with SG Clean Day, the activity took on added meaning as selected public spaces across Singapore paused routine cleaning — encouraging individuals to take greater ownership of their shared environment.

The clean-up was co-organised by ASEZ WAO, the Tampines East Resident Network, and the People’s Association, with the support and participation of Member of Parliament, Dr Charlene Chen. Seeing residents, grassroots leaders, and youth volunteers working side by side highlighted something simple but powerful — that caring for the environment is a shared effort.

In total, around 100 participants took part, including 80 volunteers from ASEZ WAO and 20 residents from the Tampines East Resident Network and the People’s Association. Together, they collected approximately 60kg of waste — 45kg of general waste and 15kg of plastic waste. Among the items collected, 2.5kg of cigarette butts stood out — each one weighing just a fraction of a gram, yet together forming a visible environmental issue.

Beyond the numbers, the atmosphere on the ground was lively and purposeful. Conversations sparked easily, teamwork came naturally, and what could have been just another clean-up turned into a shared experience that brought people closer together.

As part of ASEZ WAO’s ongoing Green Earth campaign, volunteers also introduced the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), encouraging participants to see how small, consistent actions can contribute to a much larger global effort. While the initiative was local, it reflected a wider movement of youth volunteers around the world working together with their communities to promote environmental responsibility.

More than just clearing litter, the clean-up was a step towards building lasting habits and stronger community connections. It showed that when individuals come together with a common purpose, even simple actions can create meaningful impact.

ASEZ WAO looks forward to continuing its collaboration with grassroots partners and community leaders in Tampines East, working together to build a cleaner, more sustainable community over time.
