Saving Lives Through the “80 for 80” Blood Donation Marathon

April 26, 2026

On the morning of 26 April 2026, youth volunteers and participants gathered at Bloodbank@Outram for the 1886th Worldwide Blood Drive to Give Life Through the Love of the Passover. Despite the early hour, the atmosphere was lively as volunteers welcomed participants and donors stepped forward with a shared desire to help save lives through a simple yet meaningful act.

The blood drive was organised by the World Mission Society Church of God, with the support of the Singapore Red Cross, in contribution to Singapore’s national blood programme. The initiative was also part of the Singapore Red Cross’s 80th anniversary blood donation marathon, where organisations across Singapore contribute together towards sustaining the nation’s blood supply.

Throughout the morning, many participants came down in support of the initiative, with 43 successful blood donations made during the drive, including first-time donors who stepped forward with courage to donate blood. As one bag of blood can save up to three lives, the donations collected through the drive have the potential to impact up to 129 lives.

Volunteers could be seen guiding participants, chatting with donors, and encouraging those who felt nervous before donating. Their energy brought warmth to the blood bank and turned the morning into something more than just a donation drive. What stood out was not only the act of donating blood itself, but also the atmosphere of care, encouragement, and unity created throughout the event.

The presence of Guest of Honour, Allaster Cox, then High Commissioner of Australia to Singapore, added further significance to the occasion. His visit to the blood bank and interaction with volunteers and donors brought encouragement to those present and recognised the collective effort behind the initiative.

For many volunteers and participants, the drive was more than just a community event. Inspired by the spirit of the Passover — a reminder of sacrifice, love, and the giving of life — the initiative served as an opportunity to reflect on how compassion can be expressed through simple acts of service.

Beyond the numbers, the drive was a reminder that sustaining a nation’s blood supply depends on the continued willingness of ordinary individuals to step forward and help save lives. Even a single donation can become hope for someone in need.

The church looks forward to continuing its contribution to national blood donation efforts through future drives, working alongside established institutions to support a safe and sustainable blood supply for the community.
