The Way to Heaven: Following Spiritual Landmarks

When we want to reach a certain place, we need to know how to get there. In the same way, if someone wants to go to heaven, they must find the way. But how do people find their way on earth? Often, they use landmarks—things that are easy to see and recognize, like a hospital or a train station. These help them know where they are and which direction to go.

In the same way, we need spiritual landmarks to guide us on the Way to Heaven.

The Bible explains that God has set two paths before us: the way of life and the way of death.

Jeremiah 21:8 “Furthermore, tell the people, ‘This is what the Lord says: See, I am setting before you the way of life and the way of death.

When Christ came to this world, He also explained this to His disciples.

Matthew 7:13-14 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.

Jesus made it clear: there is a road that leads to life, and another that leads to destruction.

That’s why we need to follow the spiritual markers He left for us.

Jesus Showed the Way to Heaven by Example

Jesus said that whoever obeys his word will never see death.

John 8:51 Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.”

But Jesus didn’t just talk about the way to heaven—He showed it by example.

John 13:15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.

What are the examples Jesus gave us? These are the spiritual landmarks we must follow to stay on the right path.

Spiritual Markers on the Way to Heaven

1. Baptism – The First Step

The first step on the way to heaven is baptism. Jesus taught that those who believe and are baptized will be saved.

Mark 16:16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

Before Jesus began preaching about the Kingdom of Heaven, He Himself was baptized:

Luke 3:21-23  When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. …Now Jesus himself was about thirty years old when he began his ministry.

His ministry began after His baptism, setting the example for us to follow. The early disciples followed this pattern as well.

Acts 16:29-33 The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.” Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his household were baptized.

When the jailer asked how to be saved, Paul and Silas led him straight to baptism—the first step on the way to heaven.

2. The Passover of the New Covenant – The Promise of Eternal Life

Another important landmark Jesus showed us is the Passover of the New Covenant.

On the night before His crucifixion, Jesus kept the Passover with His disciples and established the New Covenant.

Luke 22:14-15 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.

Luke 22:19-20 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.

Through the Passover, Jesus promised eternal life. He explained to His disciples that the bread and wine of the Passover symbolises His flesh and blood that gives them eternal life.

John 6:54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.

The Apostle Paul also taught the early Christians to keep the Passover, following Jesus’ example:

1 Corinthians 5:7 Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old bread leavened with malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

The early church clearly understood the importance of keeping the Passover. So keeping the Passover of the New Covenant is a key landmark on the way to heaven.

Conclusion: Follow the Spiritual Landmarks

To walk the Way to Heaven, we must follow the spiritual landmarks that Jesus established—just as travelers follow signs and markers to stay on the right road.

Jesus showed us the way through His actions: being baptized, keeping the Passover, and teaching the truth of eternal life. The apostles followed His example, and so should we.

Let us seek and recognize these spiritual markers—the teachings and examples of Christ—so we can confidently follow the path that leads to the Kingdom of Heaven.
