Women’s Veil

January 6, 2017

It is God’s teaching that the women are to wear veils during worship services. The Apostle Paul emphasized again that women ought to wear veils, explaining the providence of God’s creation to the members of the Church of God in Corinth because of the controversies that arose over the veil regulation.

1 Corinthians 11:1 Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ

1 Corinthians 11:4-5 Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head. But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head…

The Bible teaches us that men should not cover their heads while praying or during worship services. If they do, they come to dishonour God. On the other hand, if women do not cover their heads while praying or during worship services, they come to dishonour God.

1 Corinthians 11:3 But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.

In the beginning when God created mankind, God created Adam, followed by Eve as his helper. God created Eve from the rib of Adam, rather than from the dust, as he did for Adam. Therefore Apostle Paul emphasized on God’s providence, that women came from men so they should cover their heads as a sign representing God’s authority. This was the order set up by God. However, it does not mean God value men more than women or vice-versa (1 Corinthians 11:11-12). Man cannot exist without woman and neither can woman exist without man.

1 Corinthians 11:5-6 But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is the same as having her head shaved. For if a woman does not cover her head, she might as well have her hair cut off; but if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, then she should cover her head.

The Bible teaches that women must wear veils on their heads during services. This does not infer that women with short hair do not need to wear veils. Rather, the Bible emphasizes on the importance of women wearing veils through God-given nature. God has given people the eyes to regard women’s long hair as beautiful. It is tacit teaching that covering a woman’s head looks beautiful to God. We can see this in verse 15, “For long hair is given to her as a covering”.

If wearing a veil was a matter of subject to the length of hair, God must have given a clear standard of hair length. Apostle Paul wrote these words to teach God’s regulation about the women’s veil very clearly. He firmly added that the Church of God practices the regulation of veils for women.

1 Corinthians 11:13-16 Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? … If anyone wants to be contentious about this, we have no other practice—nor do the churches of God.

The regulation of the veil for women is a sure teaching of God, as seen through the Bible. Today, it is only the World Mission Society Church of God that follows the teachings of Christ which He gave to the Christians 2,000 years ago.
