How Many God(s) Is/Are There?

October 27, 2016

With regards to Christianity, many think that there is only one God. However, what does the Bible testify?

Genesis 1:26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

The first chapter of the Bible testifies to the plural Gods when we see the words “us” and “our”. If there had been only one God, it would have been written as, “Let me make mankind in my image, in my likeness”. Then how many God(s) are there?

Genesis 1:27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

When we see the subsequent verse, male and female were created according to God’s image and likeness. The Bible testified to two images of God—male and female.

We can understand this through an example in the illustration below.

As for the male image of God, Christians call Him God the Father. Then what should we call the female image of God? The Bible testifies that she is God the Mother.

The Bible continues to express that there is more than one God in other verses of the Bible.

Genesis 11:6-7 The LORD said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.”

Isaiah 6:8 Then I heard the voice of the LORD saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”

Thus, we can come to understand there is definitely more than one God. Regardless of the language of the Bible—English, Mandarin, Malay, Hindi—you will see that the Bible uses the plural term, “us”.
