You Are The Light of The World

When the light from the sun lights up the earth, we know that it is the beginning of a new day. With light, we are able to see our environment. When the sun sets, the earth darkens. But with the help of technology, we have electricity—with the push of a button we can turn on the lights in our homes; even the pathways on the streets can be lit up. When there is light illuminating our way, we can feel safe because our eyes can detect obstacles and we become aware of danger.

What is Darkness most afraid of?

Imagine you are in a place without light, surrounded in pitch darkness. Being unable to see what is around you, perhaps, you will feel discomfort. What would be your first thought? How to get rid of the darkness? If you were to shout with all your might, “Go away darkness!”, will it go away? How about fighting the darkness – can you push it away? What is darkness proverbially afraid of? It is light. Only light can make darkness retreat. After all, darkness is the absence of light.

God Came as the Light

With the physical laws of light and darkness, God explained that He came as light into this world to drive away darkness.

Acts 26:18 to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’

Colossians 1:13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves,

1 John 1:5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.

John 8:12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

The Bible compares God to light and Satan, the devil, to darkness—the opposite of light. The Bible also explains that this world is in darkness, under the dominion of Satan. And in order to save us from the dominion of darkness, God came as the light to illuminate the world.

The role of light is to eradicate the curtain of darkness. It enables us to tell the difference between right and wrong; between dangerous paths and safe roads. Light increases our sight and allows us to be mindful of our path. If we walk in a dark place, we may be hesitant to take the next step and the step after. But when light is present, we are able to walk with confidence.

Psalms 119:105 Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.

The words of God, His commandments and laws are the lamp for our feet—meaning that we can be directed towards the right path by the words of God. Ultimately, God wants to lead us to heaven. When we obey and practice the words of God, we can be confident that we are on the safest path which leads to salvation.

You are the Light of the World

Matthew 5:14-15 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.

Ephesians 5:8-11 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light(for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness,righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.

God also calls His children the light of the world. Thus, we are also given the role of light, to illuminate this world. We can shine the light by sharing the truth which we have received from God. By doing this, many people would be led to the path leading to salvation. If the role of light is carried out, illuminating brightly, countless people would be able to distinguish safety from danger.

God has since illuminated this world with his words, and has given the way to eternal life through the new covenant Passover.
